The Istanbul authorities have launched a new crackdown to curb aggressive vendor practices in tourist areas. Plans include installing audio and video surveillance, imposing fines, and introducing strict limits on vendor behavior toward visitors.
The new regulations stipulate that vendors may only greet customers within 50 centimeters of a shop entrance. Any aggressive, intrusive, or forceful sales practices will be prohibited — including physical contact, blocking passage, or harassing customers.
Any business violating rules can face closure — three days for a first offense, up to ten days for repeated violations. Enforcement will be carried out by municipal teams and police, using body cameras and drones. Vendors will be required to install surveillance systems to ensure accountability and protect against false accusations.
The changes aim not only to improve the city’s reputation and tourist comfort but also to promote ethical commerce. Istanbul is making it clear: trade should be hospitable, not harassing.
