A 63-year-old tourist fell from a pier while taking a selfie with her husband and disappeared without a trace into the Atlantic Ocean, reports Diário de Notícias.
According to the source, a married couple on the pier was overtaken by a strong wave that washed them away from the pier. The tourist’s husband managed to get out of the water, but the woman herself was carried away into the open ocean. The search for the body is still ongoing.
Local authorities said tragic incidents in the city of Ponta Delgada in Portugal occur constantly. People, they say, climb onto the pier for beautiful photos and put themselves in danger near the water.
“Little can be done to avoid such risky situations. We can conduct more awareness campaigns, but we cannot close the coastal areas along the entire coast of Madeira Island,” they said.
