An accident occurred at the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh: a tanker sailing to Russia ran aground near the resort and broke a coral reef. As Al Araby writes, everything happened in the province of South Sinai: a gas tanker ran aground on coral reefs in the Ras Nasrani area near the entrance to the Gulf of Aqaba, off the coast of the tourist city of Sharm el-Sheikh.
As the publication adds, the ship destroyed a significant part of the rare reefs of the Red Sea. As a result, the special vessels of the Department of Natural Reserves of South Sinai managed to launch the vessel and deliver it to the seaport of Sharm el-Sheikh. The tanker will be detained pending an investigation into the extent of the damage to the coral. Next, the financial penalty imposed on the ship should be clarified.
The Prosecutor’s Office of Sharm el-Sheikh has launched an investigation into the incident with the ship running aground and destroying parts of rare coral reefs. It is already known that a “sudden malfunction” was recorded on the tanker, which led to the fact that the vessel deviated from its course.
As the department informed the publication, the ship is called “Claudia Gaz” and sails under the flag of Liberia. The gas tanker unloaded in the Jordanian port of Aqaba and was on its way to Russia.
We will remind you that earlier in 2021, the resorts of Egypt were also threatened by an extraordinary event with tankers. It happened when the dry cargo ship “Ever Given” ran aground in the Suez Canal. As a result, a real “traffic jam” of tankers gathered in the Red Sea, and experts were waiting for problems – read more here. But in the end, everything worked out.
