A terrible accident with tourists happened in Cameroon – five people died a terrible death as a result of a hippo attack on travelers on the Logoni River in the North of the country. This was reported by local authorities and representatives of the Cameroon Society for the Protection of Wildlife.
The details are as follows: Tourists were canoeing down a river when a hippo overturned the canoe. Two passengers were rescued and sent to a local hospital. Then the search and rescue mission found five corpses – said Fombele Mathias Tayem, prefect of the Login and Chari department.
Safari tourists were separately warned by the Cameroon Wildlife Conservation Society that hippo attacks are common in the region, especially during the rainy season when the animals are more aggressive.
“People often underestimate hippos because they look so fat and they seem slow and clumsy. But this is not so: at short distances, the hippopotamus runs faster than a person, and in water, it is even more dangerous. In addition, these are very aggressive territorial animals. Unfortunately, when people realize that hippos are dangerous, it is usually too late,” local experts explain. Last year, hippos killed six people, including a Taiwanese tourist, in just one area of Lake Naivasha.
