Leilson de Souza, 36, was leading hikers along a trail in Rio de Janeiro’s Tijuca National Park when he was struck by lightning. The man died on the spot, reports the Daily Mail.
It is noted that on the day of the group’s ascent the weather was cloudy and the guide warned tourists in advance that it might rain. Bad weather caught them midway, but Souza decided to continue the climb at the request of the group.
When the tourists reached the top of the rock, one of the hikers was filming a selfie video. The footage captured the last seconds of the guide’s life. The man died instantly.
Tourists were afraid to move anywhere, fearing that lightning might strike them too, and waited for rescuers to arrive.
According to the publication, the chances of being struck by lightning each year are less than one in a million and at least 90 percent of victims survive.
