The melting of glaciers in Switzerland has accelerated: in just two years they have lost 10% of their volume – the same as in the period from 1960 to 1990.
This was reported by the Swiss Glacier Monitoring Network (Glamos), citing data from the Swiss Academy of Sciences.
Thus, in 2022, glaciers in Switzerland lost 6% of their volume, and since the beginning of 2023 – another 4%, whereas previously a loss of 2% was considered extreme. This process affected glaciers throughout the country.
Scientists attribute the rapid decline in ice cover to record high temperatures in summer and low precipitation in winter.
