The village of Ollolai offers all foreigners who work remotely to come and live with them in Sardinia with a record low rent of only 1 euro, or 42 hryvnias, per month. The portal SchengenVisaInfo.com notes that for this purpose, people from non-EU countries, including Ukraine, can obtain a temporary visa in Italy.
The local council of Ollolaia has issued a public appeal to anyone interested in working remotely from a village in Sardinia to apply and be among the 10 lucky ones who will be offered a rent of just €1 per month. In their appeal, the authorities noted: “Those who wish will get proximity to unspoiled nature, excellent cuisine, and incredible beaches.”
According to statistics, the population of the village has been aging and shrinking in recent years, and for this reason, the authorities want to attract more foreigners. Ollolai currently has a population of 1,174 compared to 2,013 40 years ago. The reduction is due to population migration to larger cities, and now the village wants to attract foreigners by offering low prices.
“Revitalizing the country, improving the lives of residents, and curbing depopulation – these are the goals we have set for ourselves,” commented Francesco Columbu, mayor of Ollolai, on this move. He also emphasized that the authorities are working to improve living conditions for all residents.
This is not the first time that Ollolai village is trying to attract more foreigners. It used to sell abandoned houses for 1 euro on the condition that the owners would renovate them. Since then, the local council has sold a total of 13 houses. Three of the houses, which are in poor condition, are still for sale, meaning that those interested can purchase the properties and renovate them.
This time, Ololai authorities hope to take advantage of digital nomads who can work from anywhere in the world. The Italian government already passed the Digital Nomad Visa law last March for highly skilled workers from third countries who want to work remotely from Italy. However, the visa has not yet been introduced.
Currently, workers from non-EU countries who want to work remotely from Italy can obtain a temporary work visa. This type of visa allows them to work for a certain period from Italy.
