About 477,000 foreign tourists visited Indonesia in July, according to the latest official figures. This is the biggest monthly figure since COVID-19 nearly wiped out the global travel industry.
The head of Indonesia’s statistics office, Margo Juwono, commented on the country’s record numbers of tourists: “This is good news because these tourists provide a multiplier effect for the economy. The results are indeed the highest since February 2020, plus they are 38 percent more than the previous month. However, they are still far below pre-pandemic levels.”
Indonesia recorded 1.22 million foreign visitors in the first seven months of 2022, up from 79,500 in the same period in 2021 when sweeping travel restrictions were put in place.
Between January and July pre-pandemic 2018 and 2019, Indonesia received about 7 million foreign visitors.
