European airline Finnair will become the latest company to ask passengers to weigh themselves before boarding to collect data to calculate aircraft balance, Travel + Leisure reports.
During February, April, and May, the airline will ask passengers to step on the scale with their carry-on luggage, the company said. Data collection will be carried out voluntarily at Helsinki Airport on selected European flights within the Schengen area, as well as on several intercontinental flights departing from the non-Schengen side.
The airline has already conducted similar studies in 2017 and 2018.
Passengers who voluntarily agree to be weighed will remain anonymous and their weight will not be associated with their name or booking number. Only a customer service representative will be able to see the total weight. Although their names will not be used, volunteers must indicate their age, gender, and ticket class.
Once the study is completed, the data will be transferred to the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency.
Finnair is the latest airline to weigh passengers. Similar studies were carried out last year by Air New Zealand and Korean Air, asking travelers to step on scales as part of safety measures.
