19 easyJet passengers left the plane because the aircraft was too heavy.
On Wednesday, for a very unusual reason, an EasyJet flight was delayed from the Canary island of Lanzarote to Liverpool. In addition to bad weather conditions, the overweight of the aircraft became a problem.
The plane was supposed to take off from Lanzarote airport around 21:45. However, the pilot announced that, due to overweight on board, some of the passengers had to disembark.
“Because safety is our top priority, we will not be able to get the plane airborne under the current weather conditions. There are several factors – the weather is very hot, the wind is not fantastic, the direction is not the best. You may be wondering what’s next, and that’s what I came here to talk about. I got in touch with our task force, and one way to fix the heavy aircraft problem is to make it a little lighter. If possible, I would ask up to 20 volunteers not to fly to Liverpool tonight. If someone wants to voluntarily get off the plane, we will have a reward. According to EasyJet, the amount is up to 500 euros per passenger who agrees to miss today’s evening flight,” the pilot said.
19 people responded to his call. The flight took off at 23:30 and flew safely to Liverpool.
“In the event that a flight exceeds the weight limit, we ask passengers to voluntarily transfer to a later flight, as was the case in this case, and the volunteers are compensated in accordance with current rules,” an easyJet representative commented on the situation.
#easyJet's Captain asked 20 passengers to leave the aircraft because it was overweight and wouldn't be able to takeoff from #Lanzarote due to wind and warm weather. The flight from Lanzarote to #Liverpool was delayed by about 2 hours.
