A US Customs Service dog spotted something unusual in the luggage of a traveler returning from Africa.
According to Euronews, a passenger returning from a trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo claimed to have dried fish in his luggage, but when examined at Boston Logan Airport, the dead and dehydrated bodies of four mummified monkeys were discovered.
The traveler said that he brought the monkeys to the United States for his consumption. It is worth noting that raw or minimally processed wild meat is prohibited from entering the United States due to the threat of disease. Such meat poses a health hazard.
“The potential dangers of importing raw meat into the United States are real. It may contain germs that cause dangerous diseases, including the Ebola virus,” explained Julio Caravia, the local port director for Customs and Border Protection.
It is reported that the traveler was not charged, but all luggage was seized, and almost four kilograms of monkey meat were transferred to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for destruction.
