According to the Belgian television channel rtbf, the smallest of the seven inhabited Canary Islands – Hierro – is filled with crowds of illegal migrants.
They managed to overcome one of the most dangerous migration routes in the world: the passage across the Atlantic from Morocco to the Canary Islands is considered especially dangerous, with shipwrecks often occurring there.
In just two days on the island, whose area is only 268 square meters. km, 1,200 illegal immigrants landed. Now the authorities are trying to resettle them in Tenerife. At the same time, the population of Hierro is only 11,000 people.
According to the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, a total of 14,976 people arrived in the Canary Islands between January 1 and September 30. This is 20% more than in the same period a year earlier. In total, Spain has received more than 26,500 migrants since the beginning of 2023.
