New concrete barriers will protect the Basilica of San Marco in Venice from floods, reports Nova TV.
Tourists and residents of the city will be able to pass through the square on special paths so as not to get wet. The cathedral was seriously flooded in 2019. The record for the highest tide dates back to 1966 when the water level reached 194 cm.
Venice’s flooding is caused by several factors exacerbated by climate change, from rising sea levels and unusually high tides to land subsidence, which has caused the city’s ground level to drop.
