According to Bild, Botswana President Mokweetsi Masisi has threatened to send 20,000 elephants to Germany if the import of hunting trophies is banned.
“20,000 wild elephants for Germany. I’m not kidding. If you like them so much, please accept our gift. It would help if you lived with animals the way you invite us to do,” said the head of Botswana.
It is clarified that the German “greens” are considering the possibility of introducing restrictions on importing hunting trophies. The Botswana authorities claim that the state treasury, nature reserves, and ordinary citizens will suffer from such a decision.
The fact is that in Botswana the elephant population has increased to 130,000: animals trample people, destroy crops, and devastate villages. Hunting is a means of population control, and the ban promotes poaching. In the fight against elephant overpopulation, Botswana has already offered 8,000 elephants to Angola and another 500 to Mozambique.
