Fengtai Passenger Station in Beijing, built-in 1895, completed a years-long renovation process and reopened its doors on June 20, 2022.
It is no coincidence that the completely renovated station is recognized as the largest in Asia: 32 railway platforms, modern waiting rooms, restaurants, and other amenities are located on an area of 400,000 square meters. The station is capable of serving 14,000 passengers per hour of high-speed and regular trains, as well as metro lines.
The two-tier design with high-speed trains on top and regular trains on the ground now saves a lot of space. And in general, the traditional layout of the railway station has been greatly changed.
One of the unique features of the structure is a rooftop solar power plant that generates electricity for the entire building.
China is still closed to most foreign tourists today, but Fengtai serves domestic rail routes from the capital Beijing to Shanghai, Guangzhou, and other major cities. In the future, a regular service will be established from Fengtai to Kowloon Station in Hong Kong.
As of 2020, three-quarters of Chinese cities with a population of 500,000 or more had a high-speed rail network. By 2035, 70,000 kilometers of high-speed rail will be laid across the country.
