The Dutch News portal writes that the authorities of Amsterdam decided to ban marijuana smoking on the streets of the Red Light District due to residents’ complaints about tourists’ behavior.
To improve safety on the streets of the city, a ban on the consumption of alcohol in public places and restrictions on the sale of liquor from Thursday to Sunday was previously introduced. Authorities will now ban marijuana smoking in the Red Light District and plan to ban takeaway cannabis sales.
The mayor’s office explains “the need to give residents more peace of mind at night.” Residents of the central part of the city are unhappy with the influx of tourists after the removal of covid restrictions. In total, about 18 million people visited Amsterdam in 2022.
