A 125-foot statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro was struck by lightning, and Brazilian photographer Fernando Braga posted a unique video on his Instagram.
According to the Daily Mail, the impactful footage has been viewed more than 20 million times on social media and the media.
“Lightning struck the famous Brazilian statue of Christ the Redeemer, stunning the inhabitants of the city,” writes the publication. “The 125-foot statue, installed in the Brazilian Rio de Janeiro, is visited by about a million tourists annually. This is the third time the statue has been attacked by lightning.”
The source adds that even despite the popularity of the object, the phenomenon remains extremely rare: a bolt of lightning hit the statue, illuminating the entire area around the object with a bright flash.
We add that the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro is about 40 meters high, and was opened in October 1931.
