The Spanish Constitutional Court ruled on Wednesday that strict isolation in the spring of 2020 was illegal.
The full court decision will be published in the coming days, but it issued a brief statement stating that certain parts of the blockade were unconstitutional.
Since March 2020, Spain has imposed one of the strictest restrictions in the world.
No one was allowed to leave the house, except for important matters, such as buying food, medicine or going to work. Outdoor walks were forbidden.
The children, who had little reason to leave the house, were locked up from March to May.
Spanish media reported that the court found that the authorities had gone beyond “restricting” fundamental freedoms and completely “suspended” them. Under alarming circumstances, which is illegal, the judges ruled by five to six votes.
The far-right Vox party, which challenged the blockade’s constitutionality, celebrated the decision and demanded the government’s resignation.
Although the decision may be relatively insignificant, as the trial in question ended more than a year ago, thousands of residents who have been fined for violating the law may have their fines lifted.
