At the end of September 2022, about a million new hotel rooms are under construction or planned for construction in the coming year in different regions of the world – half of them are in Europe, the rest – in China, the USA, and the Middle East.
Even though Europe has been named one of the most dynamically developing regions, the number of hotels under construction has decreased compared to last year. Thus, in September 2022, it is planned to build about 505,000 new numbers, which is 8.3 percent less than in 2021. Germany (over 38,000 rooms) and Great Britain (29,000) occupy the first place in terms of construction volumes, followed by Spain, Italy, and France (no more than 10,000).
More than 900,000 rooms are planned to be built in the Asia-Pacific region: the leader is China, where almost 312,000 rooms will appear, and Vietnam – over 28,000. On the North American continent, 207 thousand rooms are under construction, and in total, more than 740 thousand rooms are being prepared for construction: most of the hotel projects are in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
At the same time, Africa and the Middle East were the only ones in the world where there is a positive trend compared to last year. In September 2022, construction activity in these two regions increased by about 19 percent, with Saudi Arabia showing the biggest increase with 39,000 rooms and the UAE with 32,000.
Earlier in October, Condé Nast Traveler magazine announced the results of the international award The Readers’ Choice Awards 2022. Thus, the French Cheval Blanc St-Tropez, located on the Cote d’Azur, was recognized as the best hotel in the world – the mansion impresses visitors with an elegant interior created by the famous designer Jean-Michel Wilmotte.
