The possible accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO will not bring stability to Europe. This was stated by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, reports BTA with reference to Reuters.
“We have repeatedly stated that the Alliance remains an instrument of confrontation and that its further enlargement will not bring stability to the European continent,” a Kremlin spokesman told a news conference when asked about Sweden and Finland’s accession to the pact.
Last week, a senior State Department official said the prospect of Finland and Sweden joining NATO was part of a discussion between the alliance’s defense ministers in Brussels.
Earlier, The Times reported that Finland and Sweden are ready to join NATO this summer. The newspaper’s US sources said that membership in the alliance of both Scandinavian countries was “a topic of conversation and numerous meetings” during talks between NATO foreign ministers last week. Representatives of both countries took part in them.
Washington hopes to increase NATO membership from 30 to 32 as a direct result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Finland’s bid is expected in June, followed by Sweden’s bid.
