For the first time in the world, a case of monkeypox was detected in a child. The National Institute of Health of the Netherlands has detected 64 new cases of monkeypox infection, including in a school-age child.
It is not yet known how the child contracted monkeypox, but health officials believe it was through skin-to-skin contact with an already infected person.
The rest of the new cases involve men, most of whom have sex with other men. This is probably due to events during the month when gay parades take place in Amsterdam and other major cities in the country. A total of 352 cases of monkeypox have been identified in the Netherlands.
Monkeypox is a rare viral disease transmitted to humans from animals. Distributed in West and Central Africa. Symptoms of the disease are high fever, headache, and a skin rash that starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body.
Monkeypox cases have been reported in recent weeks outside of Africa, in particular in Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Belgium, Italy, Portugal, the UK, Austria, and Sweden.
