A new mutation in the delta variant of the coronavirus, AY.4.2, has been discovered in Israel, according to The Jerusalim Post. It is specified that it is already in circulation in the UK, probably from July this year.
According to the Israeli Ministry of Health, one case of AY4.2 is currently registered in the country.
It is about an 11-year-old boy who recently returned from Moldova. He was placed in isolation and did not come into contact with anyone after his return.
The BBC previously reported that the Delta variant is dominant in the UK, but according to the latest official figures, 6% of Delta cases carry the new mutation AY.4.2, which is already gaining popularity as Delta Plus.
It is believed that this mutation made the virus more viable. Research is underway to determine how dangerous it is and whether it can overcome the protections that existing COVID-19 vaccines offer. There is no evidence yet that the Delta Plus variant is more contagious.
