Cases of death from heart attack during or shortly after sexual intercourse are rare. This conclusion was reached by scientists from the University of St. George in London, publishing his article in the journal JAMA Cardiology. Thus, researchers have dispelled the myth found in movies and various programs, where the characters, often elderly men, die in a fit of passion for a heart attack.
In a new study, researchers looked at the risk of dying from a heart attack due to passion and energy associated with sex. During the research, experts studied the medical history of patients at the St. George’s Center for Cardiac Pathology to find cases of death during sex.
After examining 6,847 patients who had died of a sudden heart attack in the past 16 years, they found that only 17 died during or one hour after intercourse, which was only 0.2% of the total. In addition, 11 of these 17 cases were not elderly men at all, with an average age of only 38 years.
The researchers said their findings contradicted previous studies, which found that most such deaths occurred in older men. However, they found that most young men who died of a heart attack during sex already had heart disease.
Another unexpected finding: experts said there were more deaths among women than expected. In general, scientists have concluded that most people, especially the elderly, should not worry about the fact that they may die of a heart attack during intercourse.
