China’s health authorities announced on Saturday two deaths from COVID-19 – for the first time since January 2021, according to the Associated Press.
Both died in the northeastern Chinese province of Jilin. With them, the total number of registered deaths from COVID-19 in China since the beginning of the pandemic in Wuhan in late 2019 reaches 4638.
On Saturday, Chinese authorities reported 2,157 new cases of coronavirus infection inside the country, most of which are in Jilin. Provincial authorities have imposed a travel ban, and residents must obtain permission from police to cross its borders.
In April 2020, China revised official data on deaths in Wuhan, adding cases that were not initially taken into account due to overcrowding in hospitals and other city systems.
