An official survey in Greece has shown that high prices are forcing people to cut spending on even the essentials.
They buy less food, do not use cars, and even reduce electricity consumption, according to BNR.
There has been a sharp drop in turnover in the clothing and footwear trade, with 67% of Greeks no longer buying new clothes. High gasoline prices have reduced turnover at gas stations by more than 30%, and 54% of Greeks avoid using their cars. 53% of respondents report that they reduce electricity consumption.
In the case of food, the restrictions have led to a 35% reduction in store turnover, as shoppers now buy much smaller volumes and cheaper products.
Government subsidies do not cover even part of the inflation, economists say.
At the same time, at the gas stations in Thessaloniki, customers are treated unfairly – they refuel and leave without paying. We will go bankrupt soon, they warn.
