Lufthansa had to cancel more than 1,000 flights due to a one-day ground strike scheduled for Wednesday, July 27. The most unfortunate moment was chosen for the action – families all over Germany go on summer holidays.
Strikes and staff shortages have already forced many European airlines, including Lufthansa, to cancel thousands of flights and have caused hours of queues at major airports, baggage confusion, and schedule disruptions. Out of work were vacationers seeking to travel after months of quarantine associated with COVID-19.
Germany’s flag carrier has canceled 678 flights at its Frankfurt hub and 345 flights at Munich. Most of them are scheduled for Wednesday, July 27, Lufthansa said.
More than 130,000 passengers have already been affected, according to the airline. But that’s not the end of the story: there could be a few more cancellations and flight delays this week after the strike ends.
The protest event itself was announced by the Verdi trade union, the main demand is a 9.5 percent increase in the wages of Lufthansa employees.
