Airfare has skyrocketed in recent times, and at the same time, airports are still in chaos. Why not avoid all this and take a train journey?
Travel Portal Which? compared several popular destinations to find out if travelers can save money if they prefer the train over the plane. The analysis revealed that a family of four could save up to 115 euros, and a large family up to 587 euros.
Where is the biggest savings?
Experts compared prices on three European routes: Paris-Vienna, Brussels-Vienna and Brussels-Berlin. The price of the cheapest individual compartment was compared with the cost of the cheapest plane tickets in the first week of August.
The Paris-Vienna and Brussels-Vienna lines are operated by Nightjet, Europe’s largest long-distance train company. If two people go on vacation, then it is more profitable to fly by plane, but for a family with two or three children – by train.
The Brussels-Berlin line is operated by European Sleeper. A train ticket is a little more expensive than a flight and an overnight stay at your destination.
Portal Which? acknowledged that while more and more new intercity rail routes are opening across Europe, train tickets are still too expensive for many. “Our research has shown that single travelers and couples will have to pay significantly more for the train. However, the good news is that families and large groups can save a lot by traveling by train,” the study says.
