Von der Leyen on the shutdown of Russian gas: a tool of blackmail

Russia’s decision to cut off gas supplies to Europe is a “blackmail tool,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was quoted as saying by the BBC.

“Gazprom’s actions are” unjustified and unacceptable “and show Russia’s unreliability as a gas supplier,” she added.

According to her, EU member states have action plans in case of such a scenario, and the EC is in contact with them to ensure alternative supplies and optimal levels of reserves.

Von der Leyen noted that a coordinated response was being prepared at the European Union level and that she would work “with world leaders” to ensure Europe’s energy security.
