Scientists: the climate crisis will lead to a deterioration in the taste of European beer

According to The Guardian, experts have studied the impact of climate change on the quality and quantity of hops, a key ingredient in brewing.

It turned out that by 2050 there could be a significant decrease in both the quantity of hops produced in Europe and its quality.

In the main hop-growing regions of Germany, the Czech Republic, and Slovenia, yields are predicted to decline by 4–18% and alpha acid in beer by 20–31% over the next 27 years. Because of this, the taste of the foamy drink will become worse.

According to Miroslav Trnka, a scientist at the Institute for Global Change Research at the Czech Academy of Sciences, hop producers will have to make additional efforts to achieve the same quality as today. “We will probably have to increase investment just to maintain the current level of product,” he said.
