German airline Lufthansa is canceling more than 2,000 flights at Frankfurt and Munich airports due to a lack of staff. This was stated late last night by a representative of the carrier, quoted by DPA.
Two weeks ago, the company announced it would cancel 900 flights in July, and has now announced another 2,200 out of a total of 80,000.
“The cancellation will particularly affect domestic German and intra-European flights, but not classic resort destinations, taking into account the tourist season,” Lufthansa said, adding that the flight schedule may also change.
Strikes by airport security officials, weather events, and rising staff morbidity have created an additional burden on the company’s operations, according to the Germans.
Lufthansa passengers will be immediately notified of the flight cancellation and, if possible, redirected to other relevant flights.
In the meantime, strikes took place in Brussels between Brussels Airlines, a member of the Lufthansa group, and the budget carrier Ryanair.
They affected tens of thousands of passengers at Brussels’ main airport and Charleroi airport.
