The European institution fined Amazon a record amount. This can be seen in the company’s latest financial statements to the US government. A fine of € 746 million was imposed for violating the GDPR. Earlier this month, the National Data Protection Commission of Luxembourg imposed a record fine on the e-commerce giant for how Amazon processes the personal data of Europeans.
“There are no violations in the data, and customer information is not disclosed to third parties. These facts are indisputable. We strongly disagree with the decision of the commission and are going to appeal it. The decision on how we present relevant advertising to our customers is based on subjective and unreasonable interpretation of European confidentiality law, and the proposed punishment is completely disproportionate to even such an interpretation, “the US company said in a statement.
The reason that the fine was imposed by the relevant Luxembourg organization is that the EU headquarters is located there. The commission itself does not comment on the situation, as it is prohibited by local law.
The European government has controlled Amazon for several years because of the huge amount of data that the company collects from its users. The company justifies its actions by the desire to provide its customers with an individual approach, repeatedly stating that it adheres to all recommendations when processing the information entrusted to them. According to regulators, Amazon is using this information to gain an unfair advantage over its competitors.
