At least eight children died yesterday after a three-wheeled passenger car overturned and sank in an irrigation canal in the Nile Delta, the Associated Press reported, citing local authorities.
The incident took place in the city of Itay el-Barud in the province of Buhaira, the police said. The children worked in a factory in the city, about 140 kilometers north of the capital, Cairo.
At least 13 people were in the three-wheeled vehicle yesterday morning when it rolled over and sank in an irrigation canal.
Rescuers found the bodies of eight children between the ages of 12 and 15, health officials said. At least four other children survived and rescuers are still looking for another child. The prosecutor’s office launched an investigation into the causes of the accident.
Such crashes are common in Egypt, where roads are often in poor condition and there is a lack of regulation, AP notes.
