A variant of the coronavirus, a hybrid of Delta and Omicron strains, was discovered in Cyprus by a group of local scientists working at the Biotechnology and Molecular Virology Laboratory of the University of Cyprus.
Researchers have named the option “Deltacron”, the head of the laboratory, Leontios Kostrikis, told reporters today.
According to him, the new variant has a genetic basis of the Delta strain, as well as a number of mutations of the Omicron strain.
He pointed out that the so-called Deltacron Variant was found in 25 samples taken from the island, 11 of which were from individuals hospitalized with COVID-19 symptoms and the remaining 14 from random citizens.
