At today’s meeting in Strasbourg, the European Parliament will discuss the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the Schengen.
MEPs are expected to call for the free movement zone to be expanded to include all EU member states that wish to be included. Apart from Bulgaria and Romania, Croatia, Cyprus, and Ireland are not currently part of the Schengen area.
This is not the first debate in the European Parliament, which calls for countries to join the free movement zone. The appeal was also in the resolutions adopted in 2018 and 2020, as well as in last year’s report on the functioning of the Schengen area. The European Commission has also appealed repeatedly in favor of Bulgaria and Romania.
