Today, thousands of people protested against the quarantine measures imposed in the two largest cities in Australia, according to AFP.
Clashes broke out in Sydney between mounted police and protesters who attacked law enforcement officers with flower pots and bottles. City residents were ordered not to leave their homes for a month, except as a last resort to limit the spread of the coronavirus. Helicopters flew over the streets of Sydney, a city of 5 million people, trying hard to contain the escalation of the epidemic due to variants of the Delta coronavirus.
Reuters reports that there were about 3,500 protesters in Sydney, and police arrested 57 people.
In Melbourne, thousands of people gathered in front of the Victoria Parliament Building. Demonstrators who did not wear masks violated the ban on gathering people in public. They hung placards reading “Wake up, Australia.”
Today, 176 new cases of coronavirus have been reported in Australia, the third daily record of infections in a row. Almost all of them are located in New South Wales, where Sydney is located.
