The authorities of the United Arab Emirates have begun issuing new residence visas for remote workers. Those who want to live in the UAE while continuing to work in a foreign company can apply for a residence permit for a period of one year.
The program was first announced back in March 2021, but the new rules did not come into effect until September 5, 2022. It is clarified that the annual residence visa can be extended for another year, it will allow digital nomads to live in the UAE on a self-financing basis.
Those wishing to apply for a resident visa must provide a contract confirming employment in a foreign company, a passport with at least six months remaining until the expiration date of which, as well as medical insurance covering the costs of treatment in the UAE.
Digital nomads who have obtained a residence permit in the UAE can sponsor their family members for the same period. An application (in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah) can be submitted on the website of the Federal Identity and Citizenship Authority (ICA) to obtain an entry permit for 60 days.
In Dubai, the application must be made on the website of the Dubai Tourism and Commerce Marketing Corporation – www.visitdubai.com. Remote workers must be paid at least US$ 5,000 and the contract must be valid for at least a year.
In addition, the applicant must provide a salary certificate for the last month and bank statements for the last three months. Similar income requirements apply to company owners who wish to apply for a residence permit in the UAE. They must also provide bank statements from the company’s account for three months.
The visa fee in Dubai is 1050 dirhams, in other emirates – 300 dirhams. Payment of the fee does not guarantee a visa. After obtaining an entry permit and arriving in the UAE, remote workers must undergo a medical examination and apply for a resident visa within 60 days. A residence permit allows you to rent housing, open a bank account and enroll children in school.
