This is a significant moment in the recognition of the rights of people who do not want to be identified as women or men, and this choice is expected to be wider from next year, the department added.
The department’s statement did not name the recipient of the passport, but an intersex named Dana Zim from Colorado, who has been suing for the right since 2015, said she received it. According to Zima, his struggle for such a passport is a way to help the next generation of intersex people to be recognized as full-fledged citizens with rights.
“It’s not about me. I’m human. That’s what’s important,” said Dana Zim.
A State Department official declined to confirm whether the passport had been issued by Dane Zim, citing confidentiality.
