The University of Southern California (USC) will pay a total of $ 1.1 billion to more than 700 women who accused a former gynecologist on campus of sexual violence, USC and attorneys for the victims said Thursday.
On Thursday, a $ 852 million settlement was settled in civil lawsuits filed by 710 women against George Tyndall, who worked at the campus clinic for 30 years.
“The settlement agreement, which was announced on March 25, marks the end of the lawsuit filed in the Los Angeles High Court. Between federal and state courts, the university must pay the plaintiffs more than $ 1.1 billion, ”the college said in a statement.
In 2019, the USC also agreed to a separate settlement of $ 215 million in a class action lawsuit involving more than 18,000 women who were Tyndall’s patients.
“Our team is impressed by the courage of those who have suffered from George Tyndall’s survivors and hope that this settlement will bring them healing,” said attorney John C. Manley.
USC chief legal counsel Beong-su Kim said, “Reaching a fair deal with the affected alumni was a top priority for the Board of Trustees and President Carol Folten.”
According to CNN, Tyndall has been charged with 29 criminal charges, including 18 counts of sexual assault and 11 counts of sexual assault more than two decades ago.
George Tyndall has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial.
