Usually, airports are not considered something amazing and capable of attracting the attention of tourists. But it is a big mistake that they cannot be considered a piece of art or a topic for discussion.
In this article, we will look at five unusual and amazing airports that can be remembered forever and become the beginning of great adventures.
The first place in the list is occupied by a small Greek airport located on the island of Kastelorizo, whose area is only nine square kilometers. The airport here is tiny, but rather it doesn’t exist: it’s just a booth and a very short runway. Planes fly small, and to take off they must first go down to the water, and only then take to the air. A little creepy, but the views of the island and the sea are cosmic.
In second place is Princess Juliana Airport on the island of St. Martin (applies to the Netherlands). It is considered one of the most dangerous in the world. The runway is very close to the coast, so the planes have to fly over the heads of tourists at a distance of 10-20 meters.
Gibraltar Airport, which belongs to the UK, takes the third place in this rating because its runway is crossed by a road, the movement of which has to be stopped when some plane or helicopter needs to land.
Amazing and unusual is Ice Runway Airport in Antarctica, where the runway is pure snow and ice. True, it can only be used until the beginning of December – then the ice breaks and there is no longer any way to land.
Another fairly extreme airport is Yading Airport in Daocheng, Tibet. It opened in 2013 and is located at an altitude of 4411 meters above sea level. This height is a record for the location of the airport, and the terminal itself resembles a flying saucer.
Of course, there are still a sufficient number of interesting airports that would be interesting to visit.
