The United States will send more liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Europe via the United Kingdom, British Ambassador to Washington Karen Pierce said today, according to Reuters.
The European Union wants to reduce its dependence on Russian gas through the war in Ukraine and Western sanctions against Russia. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who is due to meet with US President Joe Biden in Brussels tomorrow, has expressed hope that the United States will commit to additional LNG supplies for the next two winters.
“We are working with Americans to supply more LNG to Europe,” Karen Pierce told MSNBC.
She clarified that an agreement has been reached with the port of Baltimore, from where a vessel with a large amount of LNG will go to the UK, from where the gas will be transported to Europe. She said it was a “transitional” measure.
This week, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said the United States was considering a response to the EU’s request for US LNG supplies, but did not provide details.
