“Every second a child in Ukraine becomes a refugee,” the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said today.
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, about 1.5 million children have been forced to leave their homeland. It’s almost 55 per minute or so.
“Virtually one child per second,” said UNICEF spokesman James Elder at a UN press conference in Geneva. According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the total number of people who have fled Ukraine since the invasion is 2.95 million.
According to the International Organization for Migration, there are already more than 3 million refugees from Ukraine, DPA notes.
