Turkey took fourth place with the largest number of tourists in the world according to the results of 2022, France became the absolute leader. The Mediterranean has become the best region among travelers, and the most numerous tourists abroad have become Americans, according to a new ranking by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
According to the report on the state of world tourism, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, tourist mobility around the world decreased by 34% compared to pre-pandemic 2019. However, despite the difficulties, in 2022, a huge number of tourists visited the whole world – 963 million people. At the same time, the total amount of their expenses exceeded $1.12 trillion.
Let’s consider the top 10 countries that tourists visited most often last year:
- France – 80 million
- Spain – 71.6 million
- USA – 50.8 million
- Turkey – 50.4 million
- Italy – 49.8 million
- Mexico – 38.3 million
- Great Britain – 30.5 million
- Germany – 28.4 million
- Greece – 27.8 million
- Austria – 26.2 million
It is important to note that Turkey took fourth place and almost equaled the tourist flow of the United States. Thus, the republic continues to strengthen its position in the world tourist market and attracts a significant number of tourists from different countries.
67% of travelers preferred European countries, 16% – North America, 10% – Asia, 7% – Middle East, and 5% – Africa. According to the chairman of the Antalya City Council’s Tourism Working Group, Recep Yavuz, quoted by Turkish media, although some regions of the world are approaching pre-pandemic levels, some are still unable to recover their losses, “especially Asia has not been able to recover.”
The nations that travel the world the most are:
- Americans – 114,900 million people. This is 1/3 of the country.
- Chinese – 114.8 million people out of a population of 1.4 billion people.
- Germans – 89.4 million
- French – 47.7 million
- Italians – 26.3 million
- Canadians – 24.4 million
- Spaniards – 21.4 million
- Russians – 20.3 million
- Citizens of South Korea – 19.9 million
- Ukrainians – 19.8 million
Turkey took only 39th place on the list of 4.1 million people traveling abroad.
About Income
Global revenues from tourism in 2022 amounted to $1.12 trillion. In terms of each traveler, the amount was $1,051. The distribution of income by country showed the following: USA – $2,658, followed by Great Britain – $2,232, Germany – $1,108, Spain – $1,017, Italy – $890, France – $850-900, Turkey – $816, Austria – $732, Mexico – $731 and Greece – $669. At the same time, Turkey took 7th place in terms of average income from tourists per capita and showed an increase of 44% compared to 2018.
