A mysterious noise from underground has disturbed the inhabitants of a Turkish village, and the cause of the unusual phenomenon has not yet been established, according to the Daily Sabah.
Residents have contacted authorities to find out what caused the strange sounds – is it water or perhaps an earthquake harbinger?
Teams from the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) went to the eastern village of Meidandere in the Sirte region to check on what has been going on in the village over the past two weeks. A detailed geological survey is being carried out on site.
Residents claim that the sounds were accompanied by shocks lasting several seconds. The mayor of Meidander Necmettin Baykara said that usually the sounds and tremors were observed at night and “woke up” the village.
“They come from the depths. All the houses are shaking. At first, we thought it was an earthquake somewhere nearby. Then we thought that it could be trucked carrying building materials, but there are no construction sites near our village,” the mayor explained.
Residents are also looking for groundwater movement, given that there is a dam in the area, Baykara added.
“I have never heard such terrible sounds in my life,” says a resident of the village. “I heard them at midnight, at one in the morning, at 2 in the morning, and they are definitely from the bowels of the earth. People run out of their houses at night when they hear them and we can no longer sleep,” he said.
