Your phone can be confiscated at the airport: the hidden rule travelers often ignore

Across global airports, a little-known but crucial requirement is enforced: your electronic device must be able to power on when requested by security staff. If your phone or tablet is dead and cannot demonstrate normal operation, it may be confiscated as a safety precaution.

This rule applies to smartphones, tablets, laptops, e-readers and most portable electronics. In some airports, officers may even ask travelers to turn on devices at the entrance to the terminal.

European airlines remind passengers of this rule:

  • British Airways states that security officers can require any device to be powered on before boarding.
  • TUI recommends keeping gadgets charged until boarding, as spot checks may occur unexpectedly.

The reason is simple: an imitation explosive cannot function as an electronic device, so powering it on is a quick security verification.

DIP explains: power bank and wireless earbud regulations

More details available in the DIP article: Four Airlines Now Ban AirPods in Checked Luggage: What Travelers Must Know

Power bank rules

  • Not allowed in checked baggage.

  • Only permitted in carry-on luggage.

  • Most airlines impose limits between 100–160 Wh.

  • Some restrict the number of power banks per passenger.

  • Devices must be protected from short-circuiting.

Wireless earbuds: a new restriction

Several airlines — including EVA Air, UNI Air and Tigerair — now prohibit placing Bluetooth earbuds (such as Apple AirPods) in checked baggage due to the lithium batteries inside.

They must be carried only in cabin luggage.

Why such restrictions exist

  • Lithium batteries can catch fire if damaged or defective.

  • Fires in the cargo hold are much harder to detect and extinguish.

Travel safety tips

  • Fully charge your devices before heading to the airport.

  • Review your airline’s gadget policies.

  • Transport power banks and earbuds in your carry-on.

  • Avoid damaged batteries and unsafe chargers.

Following these rules ensures a safe flight and helps you avoid losing valuable electronics.
