World’s longest canal opens to tourists in China

From September 1, tourists will be able to see the historical and cultural relics of Cangzhou along the Beijing-Cangzhou Grand Canal, Breaking Travel news reports.

The central part of the city of Cangzhou on the oldest and longest man-made river in the world, the Beijing-Cangzhou Grand Canal, is open to tourism. From September 1, visitors have the opportunity to appreciate the masterpiece of ancient China’s artificial waterway. A section of the Cangzhou Grand Canal, 13.7 kilometers long, was opened.

The Beijing-Cangzhou Grand Canal is 1,794 kilometers long. Its history goes back over 2500 years. The canal, starting in the north of Beijing and ending in the south of Cangzhou, served as an important transport artery in ancient China. And in 2014, a section of the canal with a length of more than a thousand kilometers was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

To bring the Grand Canal back to life, Cangzhou has been actively implementing water diversion and replenishment projects in recent years. So, in 2021, 180 million cubic meters of water were diverted, and this year – another 300 million cubic meters of water. More than 67,000 arched tree trunks were planted on both sides of the canal, and the area of green space amounted to 1.37 square kilometers, which formed a vibrant ecological corridor and strengthened landscaping and modernization projects.

In addition, Cangzhou has upgraded ancillary projects along the Grand Canal, built 12 tourist piers, six landscaped footbridges, and refurbished eight existing main bridges. Fifteen cruise ships lined up at their berths for their first trips.

Among what tourists will see, it is worth noting the Hundred Lions Garden, Canal Park, Nanchuanlou Cultural Quarter, and Garden Expo Park. Also, travelers can easily find here children’s entertainment, a sports park, catering and accommodation facilities.
