Why airport food is so expensive

According to experts, a cup of coffee and a sandwich at the airport really cost more than in the city. However, there are quite objective and good reasons for this.

We all know that not only a ticket is expensive at the airport, but also lunch. Few people know how much the rent costs to the restaurants themselves. According to experts, it is the high prices for the premises that are the reason for the increased prices for food. Some airports base their rent on square meters, but many use a percentage system, earning 10-20% on sales.

To maintain profits, restaurants have to sell their meals at high prices. In addition, they understand that if people stay in one place long enough, they will definitely want to eat. And if the flight is also delayed, the chance to get buyers is doubled. Since passengers have little choice, restaurateurs can set any prices.

Another important expense is shipping. Due to increased security requirements at airports, suppliers have to overcome several obstacles. First, most airports are located outside the city. Secondly, parking difficulties: thousands of people arrive and leave the territory every day. Suppliers also have to pay for parking as they are not connected to the airport itself. Free parking is also not intended for restaurant employees. Establishments themselves cover these costs and increase the prices of dishes to get a plus.

In addition, the supplier must pass a security check at the entrance to enter the area where the restaurants are located. The process is long and tedious. Because of this, companies charge a high price for the delivery of their goods and “eat” a large part of the profits of restaurants. Of course, security measures are not limited to suppliers.

Airports require restaurant owners to carefully and at their own expense verify the background information of each of their employees. A simple search on Google and the study of social networks will not get off here. You need to dig deep. Since staff turnover in restaurants tends to be high, the restaurant has to fork out quite often.

These are just some of the reasons why snacking at airports is not beneficial for passengers. If you do not want to overpay, eat at home or take food with you. Flying on a full stomach and with a full wallet is always more pleasant.
