The Turkish national carrier will undergo international rebranding – immediately after the changed name of the country itself. There will be no Turkish Airlines now, but there will be Turkiye Hava Yollar (which means “Turkish Airlines” in Turkish).
According to the Turkish newspaper Haberturk, the decision was made within the framework of “the framework of the program to recognize the country in the international arena as Turkiye, not Turkey.” Earlier, in early June, Turkey officially changed its name for foreigners to the Turkish version of Türkiye. At the same time, the UN granted Turkey’s request to change the country’s name in official documents in foreign languages - as a result, the English version of naming Turkey, which has an English homonym meaning “turkey” – ceased to exist – leading to ridicule and incidents. Following the country, the airline will lose its English name. “We have taken a symbolic step by changing the name of our country, which is used in the international arena. Turkey is no more, there is Turkiye. And from now on we will not write Turkish Airlines on the fuselages of our planes, there will be Turkiye Havayollar,” said President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Note that according to the Turkish leadership, the new writing will increase the recognition and value of the country’s brand in connection with the expansion of exports. Türkiye, not Turkey, will be used in all foreign languages, and the full official name of the country will be “Turkish Republic”.
