Turkey bans tourists from swimming in popular lake

Turkish authorities have banned swimming in Salda Lake, which is a popular tourist attraction and natural protected site.

The ban on swimming this season was introduced due to the discovery in the water of the lake of a high content of chemicals released, including sunscreens. This led to a change in the population of microorganisms and bacteria in the reservoir. In addition, the waste changes the quality and unique color of the water.

In this regard, the Turkish Association for Nature Conservation proposed to introduce here the same protective measures that are already used in Pamukkale. “We must love Lake Salda only with our eyes,” the scientists said.

Salda is a crater lake in southwestern Turkey, the deepest freshwater lake in the country, which can be reached from Antalya in just two and a half hours by car. The lake is famous for its turquoise water and white sand dunes formed by mineral deposits.
