21-year-old Madeline Gowers, a student at the Erasmus University of Rotterdam, spoke about whether it is safe to travel alone in Turkey. This summer, she spent 15 days in the country and shared her impressions in a blog on the website of her educational institution.
Madeline has heard that Turkey often appears on the list of countries where single girls should not travel, but now she is convinced that this is not the case. In her opinion, Istanbul is safer than London.
Although the Turks are unhappy with the unstable political situation in the country, this does not affect tourists. Local men showed interest in Madeline, but, having received a polite refusal, did not insist on continuing communication.
To protect yourself, the tourist advises you to follow a few tips. First, when going somewhere, you need to tell where you are going. You can send a message to a loved one via video link or to an employee of the hotel where you are staying. Secondly, it is better to dress modestly, covering your shoulders, chest, and legs: this will reduce the risk of intrusive courtship and attacks.
