Another city decided to announce a ban on an entire type of tourism — in Amsterdam, the local authorities made a radical decision, declaring: “Go away!” – the whole type of tourism.
The municipality of Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, has banned the parking of large cruise ships in the city center. The stated goal is to reduce the number of tourists. It is also stated that the ban is a “radical decision aimed at reducing the number of visitors and pollution of the environment.”
“Big ships are not suitable for the goals of sustainable development of the city”, – as quoted by the foreign press, this is what the municipality said after closing the cruise ship terminal on the River Ey, next to Amsterdam’s main railway station. Large cruise ships have become a symbol of mass tourism, and the ban was passed by an overwhelming majority of votes in the city council.
We will remind you that this was one of the last measures taken to prevent mass tourism in the capital. Before that, the municipality banned the smoking of cannabis on the streets in the center of Amsterdam, and the municipality also warned young Britons who wanted to arrange a bachelor party in the city yesterday also not to come.
And so cruise liners became another victim – the center-right D66 party, which governs the city together with the Social Democrats and environmentalists said in a written statement: “Large cruise liners, which cause pollution, are incompatible with the goals of sustainable development of our city,” they say.
